Recycling Food Waste

Recycling schemes to collect and process household food waste in Wales have been given the green light to apply for a share of a £14m grant. The financial boost is being awarded to 13 Welsh local councils over the next 2 years. Wales are committed to recycling as much as they possibly can.

The food waste is to be collected in a small container that contains a small bag. Once filled with kitchen waste, such as fruit, vegetables, bread, meat and teabags, the bag is placed in a bin and taken away with the normal waste collection service. Initially the waste will be used to make compost, but could also be used for generating electricity or biogas fuel.

I particularly like the fact that this system will collect meat, as you can’t put meat in a compost bin in your garden. The bones and meat attract rats and other unpleasant pests. Most food waste can be recycled in your own garden, but this is a great service for those people who live in a flat or property with no garden!
