From 27th February 2007 in the UK, the act of using a hand held mobile phone without a hands-free kit was illegal. The penalty for doing so is £60 and three penalty points on your licence. If you get 12 points on your licence, or 6 if you’ve been driving for less than 2 years, you lose your licence. However, you can also be prosecuted for using a hands-free kit if it is demonstrated that you were not in control of the car when caught.
However, I see about 3 people a week on their mobile phone whilst driving when I do my daily commute to and from work. A shocking number of those people have nearly hit my car too!
There is huge evidence that shows driving whilst being on a mobile phone is more dangerous than drink driving (as in driving whilst under the influence of alcohol). You are four times more likely to have an accident if you’re using a mobile phone whilst driving, and I’m fed up with the number of people almost driving into me because they’re driving illegally.
I just hope that the police create a system whereby you can report drivers for using their mobile phones. I’ve got a long list! Though I imagine that using a digital camera whilst driving to gain evidence is also illegal.
